In 2009, The United Way of Crawford County earned its grant match and was able to grant $5,600 to local community organizations that are working to improve their community’s health and human services. Those organizations receiving grants were Youth Service Bureau, Crawford County 4-H, Crawford County Extension- Project Lead, Cedar Street Baptist Food Pantry, Crawford County Public Library, Crawford County Solid Waste District- Tire Recycling Day. Many thanks to the community volunteers who helped make these important grant decisions.
The United Way of Crawford County began in early 2008 as a division of the United Way of Perry County. Its mission is: to provide health and human service support and resources to strengthen our community.
Since its start, the United Way of Crawford County has….
- Conducted two canned food drives to benefit the food pantries of our county
- Developed an assistance brochure to benefit persons needing various kinds of help
- Collected hundreds of school supply items for the children of Crawford County in two “Stuff the Bus” drives
- Distributed hundreds of FamilyWize prescription discount cards to assist the uninsured with the high cost of medications
- Supplied food for the working families of this county who lost the contents of refrigerators and freezers due to the after-effects of Hurricane Ike
- Distributed 200 coats to help residents stay warm last winter
- Donated coat racks to the Clothes Closet and Cedar Street Baptist Church to enable future coat distribution efforts
- Sought the input of the community to determine our first grant recipient, Cedar Street Baptist Church Food Pantry in Marengo. $1,000 was donated to help feed the hungry during this time of economic distress.
- Distributed Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program checks to senior citizens in need to enable them to purchase healthy, locally grown farm produce
